Praktiker, a success story

Praktiker is one of the leading companies on the European DIY market. We run 19 stores in Hungary. Praktiker Építési- és Barkácspiacok Magyarország Kft. is the Hungarian member of the Praktiker concern. The first store was built back in 1978 in Luxembourg, and since then we have set up a large chain of DIY stores with over 20,000 employees, and consisting of nearly 350 stores in countries such as Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, Greece, Poland, Turkey, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. We employ approximately 21,000 people across Europe.

A few milestones in the history of the international Praktiker chain:

  • 1978: the first DIY store is opened in Luxembourg
  • 1979: 4 DIY stores are opened in Germany; acquisition of 9 “BayWa” DIY stores
  • 1982: setting up of our strategy, based on the discount principle
  • 1985: acquisition of 12 “Wickes” DIY stores
  • 1990: joint DIY purchases for the ASKO group; “real-kauf” DIY stores come under the management of Praktiker
  • 1991: acquisition of “Esbella” and “Contiment”; the first Praktiker store is opened in Greece, setting European expansion in motion
  • 1993: Praktiker acquires DIY stores “BLV”, “MHB”, “Massa”, “Huma”, “extra” and “real-kauf”
  • Following a merger with the Asko-Metro Group, Praktiker becomes part of Europe’s largest commercial concern
  • 1996: acquisition of 60 “Wirichs” DIY stores; the first store in Poland opens
  • 1997: acquisition of 25 franchised “extra” DIY stores; opens its headquarters in Hungary and emerges on the market in Turkey
  • 1998: the first Praktiker store opens in Hungary; the 250th Praktiker store opens in Erfurt; 20th anniversary celebrations
  • 1999: Metro AG acquires a 99 percent stake in the company
  • 2000: acquisition of 27 Top-Bau stores
  • 2001: introduction of internet shopping in Germany
  • 2002: Praktiker runs 53 stores abroad and owns 295 business premises in Germany; the first Praktiker in Romania opens; the Metro Group purchases the shares of small shareholders, and becomes the 100 percent owner of Praktiker AG /li>
  • 2003: 25-year Praktiker jubilee; 56 international stores welcome their customers
  • 2005: the Metro Group sells the majority of the shares, and Praktiker is listed in the Frankfurt Stock Exchange; the company is present in 8 countries with over 340 stores
  • 2006: the Metro Group sells the remainder of the Praktiker shares, which have increased significantly in value in the meantime; Praktiker enters the Ukrainian market, and further stores are opened in Eastern Europe

Milestones in the history of the Hungarian Praktiker DIY store:

  • 1998: the first Praktiker opens in Budapest at the Fót junction of the M3 motorway, then more stores are opened in Pécs, Székesfehérvár, Debrecen, Szeged and Győr
  • 1999: expansion continues: Praktiker opens its doors in Kecskemét, Nyíregyháza and Miskolc
  • 2000: expansion targets Budapest: new units open at the Pest bridgehead of the Lágymányosi bridge, and on the Bécsi street
  • 2001: Praktiker opens its store in Szombathely
  • 2002: Hungary’s largest Praktiker store opens in Budaörs
  • 2003: the 14th Praktiker store in Hungary opens in Zalaegerszeg; anniversary celebrations: Praktiker’s 5 years in Hungary, and 25 in Europe
  • 2004: following a fierce contest, , the 15th Praktiker store opens in Szolnok, an hour ahead of the competition
  • 2005: Praktiker store in Győr is expanded and given a facelift, following similar modifications to the stores in Pécs and Miskolc
  • 2006: animated advertisement figure Prakti dog is born, and becomes a favourite with kids
  • plans for 2007: Praktiker to open a new store at the Ferihegy section of the M0 motorway
